For property purchase situated in Greek border areas a special permit is required (even for Greek residents), as follows:
- Greek and EU residents submit an application that is reviewed by a special committee composed of the County General Secretary and one representative from the Ministries of Defense, Foreign Affairs, National Economy, Public Order and Agriculture respectively. The permit requires a majority vote by the Committee members, and the Ministry of Defense representative has veto power (i.e. this member’s approval is mandatory);
- For non-EU residents, the definition of border areas is expanded and the procedure and conditions for obtaining the permit (which is granted by the Minister of Defense) is more burdensome. The application should be accompanied by various documents related both to the prospective buyer (e.g. CV, passport, birth certificate, criminal record, company profile and other company details), and to the property (e.g. detailed description, purpose of purchase, survey plan of the property and the surrounding area).
